How to brew kopi luwak comes down to one goal: not wasting it. A 100 gram pouch gives you roughly seven cups, so every cup you under-dose, scald or bury under sugar is a cup you paid for and never tasted. Kopi luwak needs no special equipment and no secret method. It brews like any good single-origin Arabica, with a few habits that protect what you bought. This guide gives you the dose, the grind, a recipe for four common brewers and the five mistakes we see most often.

How to Brew Kopi Luwak: The Short Version
If you read only one section, read this one. These numbers match the brewing note on our product page, and they work in almost any brewer.
- Dose: 15 g of coffee per cup. Weigh it, because a spoon holds whole beans and ground coffee very differently.
- Water: about 240 ml per cup, a 1:16 ratio.
- Temperature: just off the boil, around 90 to 96°C (195 to 205°F). Let a boiled kettle rest for about 30 seconds.
- Grind: right before you brew, sized to your brewer (see the table below).
- First cup: black. No sugar, no milk.
At 15 grams a cup, a 100 g pouch gives you roughly seven cups. Brewed this way, the cup should open with a nutty aroma of vanilla, chocolate and almond, then turn herbal and gently spicy, with soft to medium acidity and a smooth, mild body. The cupping notes behind that description are on our kopi luwak taste page.
Whole Bean or Ground: What to Order
Original Luwak roasts to order, in light, medium or dark, and ships whole bean or ground. Choose whole bean if you own a grinder. Ground coffee loses aroma much faster than intact beans, and with only seven cups in a pouch, you want the last cup to taste like the first.
How to brew kopi luwak? If you have no grinder, order ground and brew that pouch before anything else in your cupboard. Keep it sealed, away from heat and light. Our guide to how long kopi luwak stays fresh covers storage in detail. If you grind at home, match the grind to the brewer. The table below gives each setting a texture you can check between your fingers.
| Brewer | Grind | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso | Fine | Slightly finer than table salt |
| AeroPress | Medium-fine | Fine sand |
| Pour-over (V60, Kalita) | Medium-fine to medium | Beach sand |
| French press | Coarse | Coarse sea salt |
A burr grinder gives you even particles. A blade grinder works if you pulse it in short bursts and shake it between pulses, so you do not end up with dust and boulders in the same batch.
Which Roast Suits Your Brewer
Because Original Luwak roasts to order, you choose the roast when you buy. How to brew kopi luwak? If you are unsure, choose medium: it is the roast we recommend for most home brewing. The table below shows where each roast tends to work best.
| Roast | Works best in | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Pour-over, AeroPress | Lightest body, most delicate cup |
| Medium | Pour-over, French press, AeroPress | Balanced; our pick for a first pouch |
| Dark | Espresso, moka pot | Heaviest body, least brightness |
Step-by-Step Recipes for Four Brewers
How to brew kopi luwak? Each recipe below uses 15 grams of coffee. Weigh the water too if you can, because a “cup” of water is not a reliable measure.
Pour-Over (V60 or Kalita)
- Step 1: Heat water to just off the boil. Rinse the paper filter with hot water and pour that water away.
- Step 2: Grind 15 g medium-fine, add it to the filter and level the bed.
- Step 3: Pour about 40 g of water to wet all the grounds, then wait 30 to 40 seconds while the coffee blooms.
- Step 4: Pour the rest slowly in small circles, up to 240 g in total.
- Step 5: Let it drain. The whole brew should take about 3 minutes. If the cup tastes sour and thin, grind finer next time; if it tastes bitter and dry, grind coarser.
French Press
- Step 1: Grind 15 g coarse and add it to the press.
- Step 2: Pour in 240 g of water just off the boil, making sure every ground is wet.
- Step 3: Steep for 4 minutes. Break the crust with a spoon and lift off the foam.
- Step 4: Press slowly, then pour all of it straight away. Coffee left in the press keeps brewing and turns bitter.
AeroPress
- Step 1: Grind 15 g medium-fine and add it to the chamber over a rinsed paper filter.
- Step 2: Pour 220 to 240 g of water just off the boil, as much as the chamber holds, and stir for 10 seconds.
- Step 3: Fit the plunger, wait until 1 minute 30 seconds, then press gently for about 30 seconds. Stop when you hear a hiss.
Espresso
How to brew kopi luwak with this method? Espresso breaks the 1:16 rule by design. A common starting point is 18 g of ground coffee in and 36 g of espresso out, in 25 to 30 seconds. Choose a medium or dark roast.
At that dose, each shot uses almost a fifth of a 100 g pouch. Dial in your grinder with ordinary coffee first, and switch to kopi luwak once the shot is close.
Five Mistakes That Waste a Pouch Without Knowing How to Brew Kopi Luwak
- Stretching the dose. Using 10 grams instead of 15 to make the pouch last gives you a thin, sour cup. Brew fewer cups at the full dose instead.
- Grinding the whole pouch at once. Grind for each brew. Pre-ground coffee is the fastest way to lose aroma.
- Pouring at a rolling boil. Water straight off a boiling kettle pushes extraction toward bitterness. Let it rest for about 30 seconds.
- Milk and sugar in the first cup. Both cover the details that make this coffee different from ordinary coffee. Taste one cup black, then decide.
- Storing it in the fridge. Each time a cold pouch is opened in a warm kitchen, moisture condenses on the beans. A sealed pouch in a cool, dark cupboard is better.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to brew kopi luwak?
Pour-over or French press, at a 1:16 ratio: 15 grams of coffee to about 240 ml of water just off the boil. Pour-over gives a cleaner, more delicate cup, and French press gives more body. Whichever you choose, grind right before brewing and taste the first cup black, without milk or sugar.
How much kopi luwak should I use per cup?
Use 15 grams per cup with about 240 ml of water, a 1:16 ratio. That gives you roughly seven cups from a 100 gram pouch. Weigh the coffee on a kitchen scale rather than using a spoon, because whole beans and ground coffee fill a spoon very differently.
Can you make espresso with kopi luwak?
Yes. Start with a medium or dark roast, about 18 grams of ground coffee in and 36 grams of espresso out in 25 to 30 seconds. Dial in your grinder with ordinary coffee first, because each shot uses almost a fifth of a 100 gram pouch and leaves little room for trial and error.
Should you add milk or sugar to kopi luwak?
Taste the first cup black. People buy kopi luwak for a delicate, clean cup, and milk and sugar cover most of what makes it different from ordinary coffee. If you usually drink your coffee with milk, add it to a later cup, once you know what the coffee tastes like on its own.
